The later type, which have an open plastic frame around the ball ends are just pop-on/off. You are right, they need a fair amount of force to remove. I use a screwdriver to gently prize them away from the lever arm on the carb.
Thxs, will prize them .
Now I've got a question for you - I think your 33 has factory airconditioning? Can you tell me about the compressor installation, special brackets etc.? I am seriously considering fitting A/C to the Green Machine because the windows don't open and the cabin ventilation is relatively poor. Obviously the compressor robs engine power, but can you quantify how much? Does the poor boxer struggle to get out of its own way when the driver is trying to stay cool???
Well not quite factory AC. It was installed about 15 months ago but the kit was brand new and actually for a sud.
It robs about 10-12 BHP (and the condensers rob a lot of amps, 14 I think, so make sure you have a good battery) I understand. Ok if you're driving alone or with a light passenger but anymore than that you will feel the difference.
Make sure you get a powerful unit as mine is quite pathetic but this is in Uruguayan sun which in summer can be brutal.
I'm actually planning the removal of mine because I don't really use it because it's usually too hot here for the AC to cope with (and the wife prefers the windows open!!!). Just fine on warm days but anything above 27/28 degrees then forget it.
So out it comes in a couple of weeks to free up space, weight and conserve the equipment. I'm concentrating on performance more now.
I'd probably only put in AC if I had a 2.0 litre or more engine from now on unless you drive like a granny.
Let me know if you have more questions.
p.s I didn't have the special union or bracket so the mechanic had a special bracket made whihc was in an awful position (not being able to acces spark plug 4!!). I was on holiday at the time so couldn't inspect the progress.
