sometimes a gamble pays off, sometimes it doesn't
bought the coupe as a non-runner. hoped it would be able to run again, the cam-belt was still in place and turned in tiem with the crank so with fingers crossed i bought it. no battery on it so no chance of trying to get it going without buggering about
at the price it was it would either work out to be a bargain, or a long winded way of getting the parts i need
well, here is how it went in my attempt to see how things were.
already checked the cam-belt moved with the crank so that was a good start
first off fit a battery - great, no big sparky fires
next check oil, bit low but enough.
next check water, bit low so top it up, turned out to be a lot low
hear the gurgling noise as the water seems to be draining somewhere it shouldn't be
check oil level again fearing the worst
yep, a LOT higher than it was
ok, so now lets take the spark plugs out
No. 4 spark plug looked like a mig welder had been at it
did a compression test on all cylinders just for the hell of it, did actually get a reading on 2 out of 5 cylinders even if it was only 25 psi
nasty clanking noise though, which gave another clue.
knowing the outcome i carried on and poked a screwdriver down each plug hole in turn, leaving the clear suspect until last. 1,2,3 & 5 pistons went up and down no problem with the crank movement but No.4 it seems has suffered something of a failure
i can move the top of the con-rod through the spark plug hole
never mind, at leats i have all the parts i need for my 145 conversion, apart from the important bit that is
can't see the engine being salvageable, not with the con-rod clanking around in the bore. plus all the other cylinders are pretty much on no compression.
will take it apart for a laugh once it's out though.
never mind, not that down hearted.
i will be able to get a fair proportion of my outlay back in selling off other parts and for the scrap value on the shell. plus of course i can still get the rets of the parts i need like the gearbox/struts/brembo brakes/sub-frame/wiring/ecus etc.
already got a good engine lined up so still planning on it being done within the next few months
