Unidentified widgets on S3 33

I am probably going to sound a bit of a numpty, but does anyone know what the exposed metal coil fixed the bulkhead in the battery tray does? It has electrical connections but I can't trace where they end up.
There also seems to be far more relays in various locations than possible functions to control the switching of. The fusebox ones are labelled, but what do the ones on the N/S inner wing do?
