swapping diffs

Can I just swap diffs from one gearbox to another as long as they are the same final drive or do they need special setting up?

Also my one output shaft will move in and out by 4 - 5mm. Is this a problem and whats causing it?

You canīt seperate crown wheel fron pinion, they are both working as a unit.
You can swap the diff (while leaving the crown wheel), but you have to set the right pre-load of the diff-bearings and shim up the gear mesh with the shimming plates which you find between the gear box and the bearing-houses on both sides of the gear box.

Not an easy job, if you never did ist before..

Output shaft float - been a while since did this but sounds like a retainaing circlip might have slipped or broken.
Diff set up - as Sprint337 says, leave it to an expert. Those funny shaped bits of steel which fit between gearbox casing and output shaft housing are actually shims of a different thickness and are used to adjust the crownwheel/pinion backlash.
