Been using my sud a lot lately as i sold my impreza and have found first and second gear harder and harder to find! Sometimes it goes straight in and other times it takes me 3-4 attempts, which can be embarrassing it lights and roundabouts! It never crunches and is wierd that it seems to be better when cold but only slightly! Have been using the going for second then first which works but now second is even getting tricky! i dont think it is the actual gearbox its self as when it does go in its not stiff or tight its like its not there and i keep getting 3rd! its as though the lever wont go far enough to the left! wondered if it could actually be worn at the lever end? anyone else had this or is it just me being a crap driver! and use to modern cars, All the other gears are fine and smooth in and out!

sounds like it might have some play in the linkage as you say, and your not getting the gearbox sector over far enough.. can you get it up in the air and observe the linkage while somebody moves it? you might be able to pin point it?

The linkage at the bottom of the gear lever could be worn or loose - IIRC on the Sprint you can lift up the gear lever gator and can see the linkage - I guess Sud should be the same. I made some mods to mine when I had the gearbox out to reduce the movement in it.

I think the selector forks (?) can get bent. This happened on mine making gear selection difficult but Mobitech at Canterbury sorted mine.

sounds to me like the selector rod cup has got play in it (the rubber's worn) you need to get underneath and check it john, id take the selector rod off at the gearbox end (undo the circlip) you can either pop some washers on the top under the circlip to tighten it up or put a sleeve over the shaft to tighten the rubber up!!

i did both to mine and the selectors spot on now!
