i was always taught, never, ever to coast, engine breaking keeps you in control of your car
I use engine braking, car is more stable and greater control is given.
The sound is better too
I was taught engine braking to slow down gradually and under control, really annoys me how a lot of people leave braking for junctions til the last possible second. My last car had over 105,000 miles on it when I scrapped it, I had put 70,000 of those miles on the clock. In that time I replaced front brakes twice and rear brakes once, was still on original clutch and no engine or gearbox problems.
