I have been driving my newly acquired 33 with much joy but I have come across my first problem. Hopefully someone can shed some insight on this.
When I got the car the oil was black. I put off changing the oil and, well a few days ago I started the car and noticed the pressure was at 60psi at idle, 80psi (max on the guage) at about 1.5k revs. I drained and replaced the oil and filter, thinking the problem might be a blockage in a built up filter.
I started the engine and found there was no improvement in the pressures.
I ran the engine at idle for a quarter of an hour (more or less) hoping the 'blockage' would disappear with circulation and to my surprise it did. The pressure subsided slowly and eventually came down to normal (20psi at idle).
So I thought that there must have been a blockage that was just cleared with the filter.
I took it for a drive and pressure was good so I parked it up.
This morning I started up the car and to my dismay the pressure gauge showed the same symptoms again (60psi idle, max while revving). I had somewhere to be so I drove away (sheepishly) and I have found that...
1. Running the car, the pressures slowly drop to the normal range.
2. If it is parked up for a while before running; they go back to the high reading.
What do these symptoms sound like to you?
I have read that the most common causes for high oil pressure are:
1. Clogged pressure relief valve
2. Blockage in the system
3. Faulty pressure guage.
But surely if it was any of these things the pressure wouldn't go down after a while. Would it?
I acknowledge this is something I should be going to a mechanic to find out about but my pockets runnith dry at the moment.
Could anyone offer advice for the meantime?
