Simon, it the majority of alfas from our era, they filled the pillars (and various other structural members) with foam for 2 reasons,
1. was torsional ridgidity, as a hollow think will flex more than something solid (as a general rule)
2. (now this is the ironic one) for corrosion protection as it was meant to keep water our of the pillars etc. Although it has the tendency to work like a sponge.
If you ever have your roof lining out you will find the A pillars (the ones in front of your head) are absolutely crammed with the stuff,
It is like the expanda foam that you can buy from the hardware store
