Belts breaking hurts camshafts?
I had a cambelt break on my 33 16v, at slow road speed. Before I knew what the problem was, I ran the engine and revved it. The mechanic who is repairing it tells me that I need replacement camshafts. I donít see how damage to the valves can result in damage to the cams. Surely the moment a piston hits a valve, the valve stops the cam turning immediately? The engine is low mileage and did not have any cam wear that could be noticed before. So I doubt that the mechanic has found that the cams are simply worn and must be replaced due to wear. Can a cambelt breaking actually damage a camshaft?
PS The mechanic canít find used camshafts and thinks that I might have to buy two reconditioned heads that he has found.
