33 suspension help

new here and already looking for help!

I have a series 3 33 1351cc twin carb with dodgy suspension and a stripped series 3 1.7 16v cloverleaf for parts (sorry Shaun!).

can the suspension be swapped straight or is there any modifications or spares needed?

also, can the gearbox be swapped straight?

still a student so can't afford 1.7 insurance or many new parts!

any advice would be appreciated

The suspension part is almost hassle free. It's almost a bolt on job. The reason I keep typing almost, is the fact the 16v front engine mount sits lower than the ordinary 8 valvers. Which means that the 16v longitudinal links are a tad shorter, so you need to replace the front transverse member aswell. You have to make up some sort of adapterplate to fit the 8 valver to the 16 valve transverse member. It'll be worth the hassle though. 16 valve cars doesnt lift their nose as high on acceleration as other boxer fitted Alfa's, thanks to the altered geometry.

As for the gearbox. It's possible yes. But the 16V has higher gear ratio's not suitable for the "somewhat underpowered" 1300 versions.

the 16v is also 40-50kgs heavier sitting right out in front of the front wheels that helps the lift a bit

If you have all the bit's from the 1.7 the swap will be easy.

The gearbox should be a straight swap,,, But the speedo might be electronic, the carb engine's where cable.. I think.
And the gearing would be very long,,, you 'll be outdragging noone... if your in to that sort of thing.
