removing thermostat Alfa 33 16 V to get lower watertemp ?

Hello racers, is it a good idea to remove the thermostat and block the by-pass to get lower watertemp. on the track ? Last time on the track the watertemp. was 100 degrees celcius.
The car is an 33 16 V racer with std engine.
Thanks, Arie

Hi Arie - well, it takes a few minutes of running an engine for it to reach operating temperature, and at that point the thermostat opens, allowing the coolant to flow through the radiator, and stays open, unless it is very cold outside. So unless your particular class of racing is over in 10 minutes or less I don't think it will make much difference - and removing the thermostat may prevent the engine achieving normal operating temperature before you go out on track, which might make engine wear worse.

But I'm not a racer - there may be some tricks for the track that I am not aware of

I have done this on both of my rally engines.
It isnt so much about making it cooler but allowing the water to flow more freely.
As spacenut says the downside is increased warm up times so if you do it allow extra time before a thrash.
Havent seen a down side to it.

Ideally use the stat housing off a Sud as they are in two pieces and its easy to remove the top and break out the stat.

I leave all the other pipes connected although some racers remove the small pipe to the alternator mounting housing so it increases water pressure??.

I havent done this.

My needle after a 6 mile stage will be just to the right of vertical on the std gauge. Bear in mind rallying is a lot slower than racing with lots of 1st, 2nd third gear corners with revs up to 8k on my car.

i've also still got the heater in .

I would remove the heater alltogether. As for the thermostat, I know there are some that open at lower pressure. I dont know if they are available in the market though. A good thing to do with the 33 though if you are racing in it, is put a bigger radiator in the front ! The one it has is already small
