Okay, I'm 99% finished replacing the gearbox on an 89 33 Ti...One thing remains...
I just can't get the speedo thingy (not the technical term) in...
I've got the old box still, and the speedo thingy from the replacement box (from a burnt out 91 33), and they fit together fine. But no matter what I and my more car-savvy friends try, it wont go in. We've tried pushing it, twisting it, tapping it, in-gear, out-of-gear, turning the engine over...Nada...
If any of you have any ideas that would be much appreciated. I've only had this car 2 months, and it's been driveable for precisely ONE WEEK!
Welcome aboard, presumably you changed the hub side seals when you fitted the gearbox?
If so did you get the RH side seal carrier in the correct position? There are four bolts which allow the carrier to twist around yet there is only one position with a hole through the top to allow you to insert the speedo drive.
You can turn this around in the car, just undo the four bolts and twist it until the speedo sensor slides in.
The aluminium carrier bolts onto the gearbox with four bolts and should have two metal shims behind it (on each side) this retains the hub(6bolts) which connects the inner cv joint to the differential.
The Left hand side isn't critical, you can put it in any way you like. The right hand one must be installed correctly, there are four ways of installing it but only one is correct to allow the speedo drive to slip in.
It is pretty easy, remove the bolts and turn the carrier around until the speedo sensor slots in. Make sure you don't drop out the shims while you are doing this.
