You've all been mighty helpful!
just got my 'net connection back so only just read all the latest posts! I'll try the 5th gear trick tomorrow, but I doubt its slipping...yet!
It does make a noise when engaging the next gear, but only when the engines spinning fairly fast (its a screeching noise, as if a belt is rubbing).
just remembered, posted it somewhere here a bit ago, it rattles when in neutral and the pedal up, but only when on a slight hill, a downwards facing hill seems to be worse!
This is gonna cost me big i think (but not hope)!!

It shouldn't rattle in neutral or in gear even if the clutch is slipping, I think you could be right about it costing you big.
I can't imagine a slipping clutch making a screeching noise. If the alternator belt isn't slipping then it could be the belt driving the water pump.
Keep us informed.
