if you do a compression test, and its below 13 or 14 bar, you dont even need to check anything else. If it smokes, the piston rigns are fried !
Mark, I had a Sprint a few years ago, that was a regular rust bucket and the engine was crap !!!
I drove it as an everyday car to work and back for a few months, and finally one day as I started it up, the piston rod broke loose from the crank, made a big hole right under the alternator on top of the engine and came half way out !
That was piston number 1.
Recently I bought a series 1 33 to have fun and scrap it.
When it was no longer drivable, I decided to pop the engine. Full throttle in neutral for a few mins and the engine poped ! After I was taking it apart, I removed the oil pan to see what happened . Piston rod number 3 bearings became like a grinded tin !
There is a reason why pistons 1 and 3 are the easiest to wear out.
On the block, cylinders 1 and 3 are higher than the oposite side 2 and 4.
For propper lubrication of those cylinders, there are tiny injectors on the big end bearings of the crank.
If you use crappy oil , or dont change it regularly and it becomes thick or dirty, then those injectors will not lubricate cylinders 1 and 3 sufficiently!
Thats one of the reasons that its very important to change oil regularly and not being cheap.
