just a quick update on my friends 33.
Two weeks ago, Andreas got married and he had an escort of cars driving him to church !
Unfortunately , 30 or 40 mins after we started from his home, and after reving his 33 up to the limiter for quite a long time and many times repeatedly, the brutal sound of engine cut out at high revs became the sound of nightmare
The big end bearings must be totaly destroyed , but hopefully his crank hasnt been damaged .
I'll go to Limassol this afternoon and will take a set of big ends with me so we can change them and see if the crank has survived his wedding
Only one question for you experts out there : The big end bearings Andreas found in the market are the ones from the dealership, but different to his own !
His ones have a round hole on the lower one of the set - and the mine were the same when I changed them as well.
The ones that he found, are without a hole. He actually bought the ones I had bought from the dealership a few months ago and returned them when I found out they were different.
The dealership cannot give us a straight answer if those bearings are ok, or if they will cause a problem. Some of the dealership's mechanics say that its fine, others say that the car will not oil the crank properly, and others have no idea ! ( thats our Alfa dealership for you ! )
The thing is that even on mine and on Andreas's bearings, where the hole is there is nothing underneath the hole for oil to pass or anything
Other bearings cannot be found in the market, either with a hole or without. This is the last set !
For this reason, I'm taking my old bearings with me, the ones I took off my 33's engine, just to fit them on and see if the clank noise stops and if the crank is ok.
Has anyone come across this problem in the past ? This is weird
