well, I never was away anyhow but there just wasn't much to tell. There is now, unfortunately!
I had been driving around happily the past few weeks, did some minor adjustments (like finally fixing the fuelgauge en installing a radio) and all seemed well. But appearently it wasn't. Yesterday I came home late after a long trip (250 or so km's) and I had just been driving smoothly, not like flying or anything. But when I was almost home and left the motorway a knocking noise appeared from under the bonnet. The engine still ran well apart from that so I eased it home (only a few more km's) put it in the garage and went to bed. Tired, late, dark so what could I do. This morning... I took the spark plugs out. The ones from the left cilinderbank are ok, 'coffee'coloured. The ones from the right side of the engine are black and dirty. Hmm
. I checked oil level, which was ok and there wasn't any metal scrape coming up with the dipstick so that seemed hopefull. Then I measured compression ratio (should have done that much longer ago maybe?) and it appeared that cilinders 1 and 2 had fairly high compression (too high maybe, up to 14,5 bar?) and 3 and 4 (the 'rear'-ones) have only around 9 bar. Took the cam-covers off (it's fitted with old fashioned mechanical tappet-cilinderheads) and measured the valve clearance. That was ok. camshafts themselves are not new, but also not thàt suspicious yet. So, what's left?
I fear for a bigend bearing or maybe a broken piston...?
Calculating chances and thinking of options of what to do now... I want it running again, fast!
