There will be a pronounced rattle from the gearbox on tickover. This has always been put down to the reverse gear idler amongst my circle of friends.
The noise you are describng sounds like something more serious, maybe a bearing breaking up.
Luckily you can check/investigate those 'boxes in situ!
Drain the oil and remove the sump cover.
Check the oil for large pieces of metal.
Also have a good look around in the gearbox for similar debris.
Check for horizontal or vertical (radial) movement in both the input and output shaft. There should be none.
It is possible to slide the box off the back of the engine on these cars, despite what the book says. Just be carefull of the distributer cap, if you have one. You only need do that if there is something wrong. If not just put the sump and oil back where they belong! Simples!
