Yes, a 205 section tyre will fit on a 6" rim without excessive sidewall bulging. I like all my cars to handle, so I'd never run a tyre that was too wide for the rim - usually its the other way round. I ran a pair of 205/60 on 8" wide drag slots for a while... stiffened the sidewalls a treat, but you have to watch for kerb damage...
I had a set of limited edition alloy wheels on my Droop Snoot, which were designed for run-flat tyres. Very nice wheels, but only 6" wide. I used 205/60 all round. They're still on the car, as far as I know (been in touch with the current owner fairly recently).
That's a great story - Gotti were formed around 1968, so these wheels must have been some of the first designs they produced. They appear to be in excellent condition too (magnesium can corrode quite badly if left exposed to the elements). As everyone has said, far too good to mess with!
