Sausage - hot news!
I was completely wrong - and I'll tell you how I know!!!!
I put my reworked transaxle back in the Nova a couple of weeks ago, and refilled it with oil, up to the bottom of the filler plug, just like the book says. Within 2 days my RH halfshaft, and brake disc, were slick with oil again - just like the old gearbox
So I reasoned that lightning couldn't strike twice, and besides the side cover oil seals would allow oil to dribble off the bottom of the 'box, not let it onto the halfshaft, which doesn't have an oil seal anyway, just an oil thrower.
The bottom line is, with the gearbox horizontal in my chassis, filling up to the level of the filler plug overfills
the 'box. The oil level rises above the level of the halfshafts and dribbles out, even when stationary. So the Alfasud engine and transaxle must be installed at an angle
, otherwise the same thing would happen to them.
I have drained half a litre
of gear oil out of the box and the oil level is just
below the halfshafts (I think - still checking for dribbles when stationary).
The oil contamination doesn't help the braking one bit (although it may burn off the pads eventually), so if you fit your engine and box horizontally, don't put fresh pads in until you are sure you have got the oil level below the halfshafts!!!
