If in doubt take the head off !! I have the results of a washer falling into a 1.7 engine here, and it is not nice. The engine ran for such a short time, and it totally stuffed up the head and the piston. The washer managed to embed itself in the crown of the piston, and severely damaged the head.
I will always remember that brief second of horrid rattling !!
I went through all the steps of magnetic probes, torches, etc, but if the inlet valve is open, it will go straight into the combustion chamber.
Its a tough call but the only safe one.
I did re-torque the head later to make sure all was well, it took up a wee bit more, and has been totally reliable since.
