Catalytic converter question

My Minari kit car is based on a K reg 33 16v registered in March 1993. From the engine and chassis numbers (via our local Alfa specialist) I have found out that the 33 was manufactured in September 1992.
Am I legally required to have a Cat in the exhaust? The SVA tester at Exeter insisted that it was needed (and hence one was fitted for the test) but I would prefer to run without.
Reading around various internet sites has proved inconclusive.
Any ideas or real life examples I could quote?
Thanks, Mark

Re: Catalytic converter question

All cars registered 1993 0nwards require a cat,it is a mystery as to why that car was allowed to be registered in 1993,it should had been registered by 31 Dec 1992,for example if a dealer or an importer had euro 2 cars left in stock in 2000 they were all pre registered as X plate by Dec 2000 and then sold as pre registered but with no miles, cheaper than list ,because euro 3 came into effect from 1 Jan 2001 and they wouldnt comply. This happens with most makes every time there is an emission or safety regs changeover year.

Re: Catalytic converter question

A number of cars produced between 01.01.1093 and 31.07.1996 are exempt from the cat test, which should show up when registration is put in on the system.

The cat is a homologation requirement but not needed under current UK legislation. The only requirement is to fulfill MOT emission standards, which isn't easy to achieve and maintain without a cat.
