Well! Inevitable I guess but still a tad depressing!
Soaked the carb body in deisel for a week now and it has become clear that that spindle was NEVER gonna shift. I mean it was rock solid.
I don't often (and don't like to) resort to extreme butchery in order to repair something but in this case I simply had nothing to lose. Either the spindle came out or I tossed the carb into the bin.
So I took the spindle out. Both bearings are thick with rust but the bearing at the linkage end is totally seized.
I now face this dilemma. IF I can get hold of a new spindle I can repair the carb. Dellorto and weber carburettors online
has most of the parts I need but NOT the spindle
The spindle is now totally wrecked!
I need 2 bearings, 2 butterflys and all the minor parts like butterfly screws, a roll pin for the spindle etc. So Greg was completely right, I'm already looking at 50 or 60 quid for the required parts, let alone the service kit and whatever else might need replacing.
So - and I'm guessing that - a good pair of 36IDFs are like rocking horse doo-doo but I'm looking for some if anyone has any!
Other than that, what are the carb alternatives for the 1.5 boxer? Anyone fitted anything weird and funky to their Alfa and got good results? A bank of 4 carbs from a big Japanese motorbike...perhaps?
Cheers, and have a good Christmas y'all!
