I've got my transaxle out being overhauled/uprated by Alex Jupe, so the the engine is on a trolley in the garage. Had a good look at it today for the first time since it came out and its not a pretty sight.
First off there's a chunk of alloy missing between the distributor and the timing cover plug, and the plug itself is broken too. My friend used his electric lift to drop the engine out but he's been a bit brutal.
Oh well, the engine was going to be replaced anyway I suppose... just not right now.
There's oil everywhere. I just can't see where it is coming from. Some from the sump gasket perhaps, plenty from the nearside camshaft seal. For the last few hundred miles I have been hearing a metallic tappety sound, but I've just checked the valve clearances and they are all spot-on, which I suppose should be expected from an engine with only 8500 miles from new, but that still leaves the tappety sounds to track down...
My clutch slave cylinder has failed and that has left a lot of yucky fluid residue. I took the little convoluted rubber gaiter off and it was full of fluid. At least the circlip released easily and the cylinder tapped out OK. Need a replacement for that.
Then I moved around the front, and found that the steel plate bonded to the rubber front engine mounting wasn't bonded at all!
So I need a new front engine mounting as well.
I think when I finally get the camshaft pulley wheel (and the rear as well as the front cambelt covers) off I will find the camshaft seal is still leaking, so I'll have to get another head gasket set for a replacement. I can't believe the oil flows out of this seal so liberally, its everywhere! But there's nowhere else it could be coming from. I must have damaged the seal putting it in earlier this year when I changed the cambelts.
I'm worried that replacing some of these parts might be a problem. Justsuds list the clutch slave cylinder, but they don't have a price against the front engine mounting.
Sorry, I'm just a bit depressed at the moment - Green Machine is my only car, and its sat in the garage going nowhere and its cold and I'm not feeling very festive and I'm annoyed about the engine damage...
Alfanauts are GO!!!
