Wow that was a great story!
Shows how far we will go to get our hands on the magnificent Alfa Romeo 33!!
I spent 6 hours travelling down to London to pick my 33 up - got on trains, buses and tubes and got lost quite often!
Its funny how I came across it - I'd passed my test 3 months before and was driving in a 1.0l VW Polo which was underpowered to say the least! When I say underpowered I mean there were some hills I nearly rolled back and ended up where I'd started
I'd always admired the 33 as when I was a kid in about 1995, my Dad had bought a bright red 1.7 which looked stunning!
The minute I saw it I knew that was the car for me in the future and joked to my Dad that I would someday own one of these 'sportscars'.
After 5 years, a lot of welding, thousands spent and countless trips to his preferred backstreet garage specialising in old Alfa's in Sheffield, it was time for H515 AKM to die as it were.....we spent the weekend chopping it up with an angle grinder and were horrified to find the pillars were hollow with rust !
I loved that car and miss it loads!
After a Fiat 126, 3 Sprints and a 33 my Dad decided to go for a more robust car and bought a Volvo 740 estate. Well he was 40 after all and his boy racer days were over!!
Anyway 7 years later I'd finally passed my test and started driving my Polo which I'd had for 3 years - 2 weeks later I drove to Dunkerque in France, it was slow but fun.
I started getting bored of the Polo with its low speed, 4 gears and dull interior, even though I'd spent the last 3 years dreaming of passing my test and driving it!
I'd joined the Alfaowner forum a few years before - I had a look in the classifieds and saw an advertisement for an Alfa Romeo 33 1.7 S2.
My heart started racing - I clicked in it hoping it was a red one like my Dads old one which it was!
£500 was its price, bargain! It has 2 months MOT and tax but I didn't care, I wanted that car especially as it was a Cloverleaf which made it better than my Dads
I spoke to the guy advertising it, Dom, and told him I wanted the car but had to sell my car first. I put mine on eBay and it sold for £350.
The lad who had won it was a 17 year old boy racer who had just passed his test. He reminded me of myself when I was that age, as on the way home the centre section of the exhaust broke causing the Polo to sound like a tractor! He didn't care though as he loved it as soon as he saw it.
I spent all my wage on the Alfa paying for it, paying for the insurance and paying for travel down to London and petrol back to Leeds.
As soon as the deal was done, Dom walked in the opposite direction and I was left with this 'beast' !
I'd never experienced so much power and as soon as I floored it, was shaking with adrenalin! This was a tad different to my trusty old 1.0l Polo!!
Driving back to Leeds was tiring but so enjoyable.
Turns out Dom had had the car for the last 18 years and it had spent most of its life abroad so was free of the demon tinworm!
It has a few dents, nothing minor, and the paintwork needs a good wax.
Nevertheless its probably the best thing I have owned and even made my Dad jealous which was great!!
Anyway thats my story about me and the 33 hope you enjoyed reading it !
