The offset (ET) on some of the wheels is cast into the outer rim of the wheel or alternatively its cast on the inside, my 5.5x14 standard 1.7" wheels were 39mm - which I think is standard for the 1.7 Sprint / 33s, cant see why the 16v would be any different.
But it depends what you are trying to achieve with your choice of wheels, standard look, bigger look, bigger diameter, wider, space for big brakes / calipers etc?
So I'd say there is no perfect offset, anything between low 30's to 40 should be fine as long as there is sufficient clearance for suspension components (40's offset) and the tyres dont rub on the bodywork (low 30 or less offset)
