Re: Alfa 33 Oil Psi HELP!!!!!
Yes, I have had sender problems before as well, so if there are no other signs of oil starvation (rattling on start-up, oil warning light stays on for a few seconds), that could be the problem.
Early 'Suds had an engine temperature warning light that stayed on until the RH cylinder head reached 30°C before going out. I believe the sender switch also flicked the light on when the temperature got too hot as well, but I'm not so sure about this feature. It was a reminder not to thrash the engine until the oil was warm enough. Later 'Suds and the 33's dispensed with the low temperature warning light and simply used the over-temperature feature.
The point about the non-return valve in the oil filter is a good one, as without this valve oil will return to the sump with the engine off. The main oil gallery runs along the top of the block so will take a few seconds to fill up if not fitted. If you have a replacement, fit a new sender, or if you have access to a capilliary oil guage and suitable adapters, use that to check the oil pressure. Hopefully you will get a good reading and can condemn the sender unit. Otherwise things could get expensive!
