Update
Just been pootling about locally but went to the Kimbolton Show and was made very welcome on the East Anglian AROC display - thanks Clare and others.
Since the coolant was lost, I flushed the system and lots of "stuff" came out and now the system seems ok but we will see on the long run to Chatsworth........

Sixnut Good to see you resurfacing,
How did I miiss you at Ickworth House.?
I was around the Concours cars most of the time as I tested the water in competition for the first time
Result My lady in red is being resprayed and will be at Chatsworth.
I was encouraged by the Herts Section members giving me enough votes for second prize to an outstanding 105 at Elstree Aerodrome Concours meeting ,
The members are the judges of what car present they admire most,
Its nice and friendly with a note changing hands or a nip to the bar,Only kidding.!!.
Stuart Taylor ,AROC mag editor was a judge at Ickworth House and it is his fault I am spending a couple of grand on the full respray,
Whats new mechanically speaking ?
There is a Classic Car event at Harpenden Common this coming Wednesday from 3pm ,
The owner of the Coachworks is taking an old Chevvy along .Not far from Melchbourne
I visit the Forum site at this unearthy hour because of bladder malfunction

Sorry for delayed reply Alf but I wasn't at the Ickworth house show mine was Kimbolton. I didn't see you at Chatsworth - were you there with a resprayed "Lady in Red"?
Anyway the 6C was at Chatsworth and so all my ambitions for this year were achieved ie Stanford Hall, Vesuvios, and Chatsworth - Kimbolton was a bonus!
However the charging problem seems to be in the Alternator itself (Chris -(Supercharged16V) was a Superstar trying to get it sorted at Chatsworth on his holiday over here - and his fiancee is lovely -and very understanding!!!
So, as it also severely overheated and has now got a head gasket blow into the coolant, it will be gracefully taken apart and refurbished over the winter.
Perhaps I will start a new thread " 6C refurb...."?

is the head gasket blowing linked to any localised boiling at all? i was reading about similar troubles in the lancia motor club mag recently, the water boils to steam and creates air pockets which lead to the gasket failing. maybe the set up with such distance to the rad prevents the water circulating quickly? have you looked in the header tank (in the front?) to see if the water is flowing around? but difficult to see now though
maybe a seperate header tank can be created high up in the rear quarter panels to allow the steam to get out?

clutching at straws really, but sometimes another view helps.

really sorry to hear you didn't make it home though after all your efforts to get there, far more brave in your journey than most of us would have been, myself included

i know when we left at about 4-45pm there was a fair amount of traffic holding things up for a few miles, kept a check on my temps on the sud but luckily it was ok.

Sixnut .so are you needing a spare alternator? .I have one maybe two available/
As I supplied your emergency battery at AutoI Italia DAY. ,I should be given the honour of completing the charging system supply of parts,
Did you test supercharged theory about havining the dash wiring in the charging citcuit
My lady in red is coming home today I should take the opportunity of usung yiur site for coachworks recommendations ,but in view of my criticism for a certain specialist having a lot of free adverisiing .I will keep any recomendtion on the proper forum thread.
it passed thr MOT and I am told it looks stunning.
Shelsley is a must, but could not win but you never know.till you try.
A freebie meal on the Saturday and Concours on Sunday .sounds good to me,.
car was not quitr ready for Mit Car on Sunday ,did not want to ruh things.
The Harpenden Common show was absulutely fantastic 1200 cars more tnann25 yersrs old and another 500 who could not get on to the common and parked in the streets A dozen Alfas were there.
Will post info on how to get a cd

Hi Alf
Chris did try to run a parallel load cable to the Alternator but the light didn't go out when the engine/Alternator ran so it needs to come out - which means stripping the interior..... So I will do it some time over the Autumn/winter/Spring and attend to several other areas to improve/refurbish/respray. Glad your "Lady in Red" is looking good and that you enjoyed Harpenden.
I collected the 6C from the M1 services and it now sits on the drive - and the engine started first time to load and unload on the trailor.......But it will be dropped out - or rather the body lifted off the engine subframe, for a proper engine check over, with the heads off etc over the winter.

I am going to get a spare engine to practice on cambelt change
especially.
My first big engine job was on my first car a hillman minx when I did a decoke,
So it is unlikely you will get to Blenheim for CostWold Alfa DAY.
i think i have a spare header tank ,its a blue bodied thing yes.?
Remember Mick Twohy sold his 164 for a special priject ,well i arranged to have a option on spares when the engine was taken out.well the new owner ejoyed the car so much that he posponed the day of judgement,
However I had a message from him wanting a wiper motor damaged by leaking matrix coolant.
Lickily I had the right 8 opin motor which had been to russia and back,
Hes another bypasser and leaving the repair/replacement of the matrix ,not needed for the summer,The Mot is due soon so its almost decision time.
Mick has encouraged this Irishman from OMAGH to tell his story on line like you
I have only seen the project car under wraps so have no idea what the v6 is going in to,
Maybe Mick knows.
How is er in doors bearing up under the strain of these breakdowns.?
Having you around as a retired person must require a bit of adjustment, also

Be careful too much effort in the garden may cause those arteries to harden .
Bending doen to tend those borders could cause a lot of back disorders.
For a while just stand and stare ,perchance to dream or sniff the air.
But then youll end up varicose and be like me need extra hose
Which reminds me
Whats Lauren been up to lately./we we concerned at your absence and exchanged a word or two.Must keep the tread alive while you are sidelined.
My twin spark is named THE GREEN MAN must have sex equality,

Hi Chris
When it was hot at the M1 services after MITCAR I refilled the water, started the engine and the expansion bottle erupted...When I switched off it stopped. When I got back two days later and restarted the car it just disturbed the water in the expansion bottle so there is a problem, but possibly not as serious as I first thought.......Still I want to spend time and tidy the car up so it is being laid up for the time being.

Rumour has it from one fellow Hampshire person I met at the Wash yesterday . that you have done what I feared and warned about,
You have been distracted with another project,so you had better come clean .
My newly resprayed Lady in Red turned a few heads ,but not good enough yet for a concours award.
I made a fatal mistake in taking he word of the coachworks that an internal valet had been done.Lifting the front new carpets the judge revealed dedris that cost me a lot of marks,
I only had two days to work on the car after the respray which was not enough .
That Hampshire person kindly agreed to have a photo taken by the car ,which I would share with you if I knew how to do it,
My spare alternator has free running bearings ,but would have to be sent away for testing function .
According to PUD at Auto Lusso the Alfa alternator is usually durale and trouble free but defiitely needs the dash to be connecred for charging to take place

As usual it was a lot of last minute work and I was spraying the bonnet the night before! But it got there ok (with a slight misfire) and there were two "big" Healeys a 100/4 and a 100/8 (383 Chevy engined 3000). There was another "Frog" with a 1380cc A series.
However I had left my wallet - and licence. in our other car - which had gone to Leicester overnight. So I had to wait for my wife to get back before I could sign on.......So I only got a single run in the afternoon ( easy off the line try out -15.7 @ 88mph) then the track had a major oil down so I put the silencers back on and drove home. I've pulled the plugs and three were oiled and sooty - they were new in 1990!

Quite right!
I have spent a lot of time getting oily recently so I will be doing lots of domestic - ing to make amends. The 6C has been put under a car cover and the garage doors will be kept shut for a while......

How about taking Er in Doors to Blenheim Palace for some cultural activity on the 5th September.venue of Cotswold Alfa Day,A good gathering of Alfas anf we will be doing a Giro panoramico from the Fossbridge 6 miles N of Cirencester.on A429 Further details on Cotswold wbsite
My wife needs some company on these occasions and they have met at Auto Italia Day,
Lauren was thiking about it as I recall,
You must have other drivable vehicles in your stable and I think you should see the Lady in Red .
Stunning is the word being used,
Besides you owe me somethig for the new battery which got you out of trouble at Auto Italia Day and allowed the V6 to be heard and got you home.
So er in doors owes us the pleasure of her company again by way of part payment .I hope you both are free,
If you want the alternator its agood opportunity to pick it up .
Suggest you start collecting spares anyway .

Thanks for the alternator offer Old Alf but we won't be able to go to the CAD. We've been up in Yorkshire and will be up there again that w/e I believe. Glad that the "Lady in Red" is being well received. I've still got some 164 bits and bobs which you are welcome to have when we next meet up.

Totally "Off Topic" but we raced the electric car again at the weekend and it went well but threw the chain off twice, then, in a "racing incident" at a corner, it got tipped and completely rolled over! Driver fine - and we were awarded a prize for how well the safety features in the car held up.
Re the 6C, I am negotiating for a fresh storage space as we now have another MX 5.........

Sixnut .You are being distracted again as I warned everyone ,as did ER in dooers at Auto Italia Day at Stamford Hall
The 6C will be in cold storage and permanently so i fear as does PUD 237 at Auto Lusso Parts eho I asked how much i should charge you for the alternator.
You just cannot let the 6C and us down and Alfa Romeo too.
Please stay focussed ,
The dash warning light must be connected up to the charging system and Pud agrees.
I am looking at a car his weekend up your way and could drop the alterrnaor in .
If you are not at home I will leave it round the back with a bill for it and the battery,
I am off to the States soon and need the money.
The melding of Sprint and 164 Electrics at the dash will be tricky but with ArJen at the 164 Owners Register to assist it will be done.never fear.
Is the rear end ride height issue sorted..or front end which ever way you look at it.
If you want to sell the 6c to make space for the MX5 what would you be asking .

thats a bit harsh isnt it ? Maybe Phil hasnt got time yet to get some more work done on the 6C !
Maybe he is just taking a brake from it all ! I know I do some times ! I havent touched my " Sprint Drift machine" in more than a week now. That doesnt mean that I wont get it done or that I dont want to get it done anymore.

These things take time mate and there's no point into rushing things if you arent feeling up to it , thats all I'm saying

Supercharged. the fact that Sixdnut wants to move the 6C out of his home for another car is reason enough to be concerned that he is losing interest in the 6c .and intersested in something new.
Philip is a oine man band ,but only with one pair of handa

Now if he accepted some assistance he could have more than one project on the go.,two or three maybe more,.Six nut are you listening,?

While he remains a restless spirit on his own we must keep him focussed with a harsh word or two
All I had to go on was a first post for ages that had no mention of the 6C,only that he was looking for storage space for it.
Have a break by all means but let someone else do some work on the car under you supervision .while you are "resting"

I understand why you want to "push" him to finish the 6C, but just look at when this project was started.
I've started working on my red Sprint three years ago and I'm only half way there !
Eddie spent almost 9 years to complete his V8 Sud !

I know its none of my business, and I dont know what your relationship is with Philip, but I would never feel let down if he wants to lay low for a while, or even abandon the project if he feels like it.
The reasons why he is doing this may be from economical, to household, and even to lost of interest !
But whatever this reason is, personally I wouldnt feel let down in anyway and I respect his decission.

I too would like to see this project finished, but its not my project, not my pocket, not my life, so I would never judge Philip for his desission.

As far as I'm consirned, Philip may finish this project today, or after 10 years or sell it or scrap it if he wants to.
That doesnt define who he is and it doesnt give me the right to tell him off !

Thats my opinion even though I wasnt asked for it.
Philip my appologies, I know I'm not your lawyer, but as you probably know by now, sometimes I cant keep my mouth shut
