15" wheels too big on a Sprint?

So I'm finally back in the Alfa world now, I just got a 1982 Alfasud Sprint http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
It's in fabulous condition, just needs a little TLC as it was garaged for a number of years.

I'm trying to get ahold of a set of alloy wheels for it - must be Ronal A1. I was thinking of 14", but I found plenty of people mentioning 15". Do you guys think 15" is ideal on an otherwise factory Sprint? Or will 14" look / feel better?

I do not want to modify it in any way... Except maybe make it a little bit lower in the future...

OK so I missed the 15" set that was for sale.. now I managed to get ahold of a set of 14" Ronal A1

Still waiting for them to be delivered; but until then, I am doing some research regarding tyres.

I know that on the later plastic-bumpered Sprint, Alfa used 185/60/14 on the optional alloy wheels. But since my car came out of the factory with 165/70/13, wouldn't 185/55/14 be a better choice?

185/55/14 - 0.4% Smaller than 165/70/13
185/60/14 - 2.9% Larger than 16/70/13

0.4% is negligible.. and I would prefer for the car to go slightly lower, with less sidewall flex, rather than the other way round.... thoughts?

!?

Put the 185/60 R14.
Itīs the best choice for the car, and you have to remember that cars of that age have bigger speedometer error than new ones, so with the 185/60 the error will be less.
And also probably you will get better and cheap types for those 185/60.
Thats what I have on one of my Sprints and they work fine.
The other one has 195/50 R15

When the car is finished it will be lowered, so these are not final.

I agree 185/60/14's are best (actually, for a stainless steel bumpered sprint 165/70/13's are best, but anyway...), but remember the metric tyres fitted to the first sprint qv's were 190/55/340, so 185/55 is maybe closer to that size.

Appreciate your replies, however I'm still not convinced I should go for 185/60.

I don't really care for speedo error to be honest so that is a non argument in my case. The way I see it is that if I'm changing the wheel size I prefer to retain the rolling circumference as close as possible to the original.

So unless anyone has a specific reason why NOT to go for 185/55/14, I will probably be ordering them this week

PS: it's true that there is a more vast choice for 185/60/14, and the prices are a bit cheaper. But I did find quality tyres in 185/55/14 and it's only a 30-40 £ difference in all four tyres, so I don't think this should be a game changer. FYI I am considering the Vredestein Sportrac 5.. I read good reviews and the thread pattern isn't too modern, and they're reasonably priced..

2 month ago I bought a pair of Falken Ziex ZE914 in 185/60 and they are very nice.
Not as sporty as what you can find for 15" rim, but good for what you can find for 14".
They costed me 100 euros (50 euros each) installed.

Go for 185/55, looks much better than the high walls 185/60 and is comparable in looks to the 190/55 TRX. Reason Alfa used the /60 is the /55 was not available back then. On a stainless steel bumper Sprint the 14" Ronals are fine, on a later Sprint the 15" look nicer as they are also 7" wide, not 6" like the 14". But again, not with 195/50 tires, too high! 195/45/15 is more equal to the standard size. Here is my old Sprint back in 1996 with steel Alfetta wheels widened to 7x14 and 185/50 (even lower profile).

I like the look of the tires on your sprint, however it is also lowered.

As much as I was convinced to go for 185/55, now I am concerned that the tyre will look too small on a standard height car. So I was actually planning to get 185/60/14. Unless someone has a picture of a standard sprint on 185/55/14..

I have now started the work on the Ronals.. hopefully they will be ready in a week or two..
