Rear gearbox mounting replacement

The rear gearbox mount on my Sprint has lost most of its original rubber and needs replacing. Has anyone tried to do this with the gearbox still in the car? The Haynes manual says basically "don't try this at home" but maybe the box can be levered down and the old mount extracted and replaced. I did this with my old 1750 GTV many years ago by cutting through the outer ring with a hacksaw blade to release it and then eased it out with a screwdriver and a hammer.

Re: Rear gearbox mounting replacement

I reckon if you undo the two bolts on the front crossmember engine mount also and then pivot the engine and box it should be possible.

You may also have to slacken the main engine mount , but if you do make a mark fo the bolt height first so you can retighten it in the same position.

Done that! Easily solved in situ, remove the 2 bolts holding the tubular piece in place at the rear of the gearbox extension and slide that out. Slacken main engine mount on top of the gearbox having placed trolley jack under the gearbox, lower box gently and you should have sufficient space to chop old one out and push new one in. Reverse procedure to finish, I can't remember any problems.

Re: Rear gearbox mounting replacement

ther are two types:
hard one -that is pessed in like a bush and the rubber is moulded to the pin
or easy one -that you can pop out with just your fingers and has a hole where the pin goes through
good luck on late car, my early model has the hard one
