Sud rear caliper conversion

After much trial and error I've finally got all this to fit together and I think it will really improve the look of the car. Probably won't make a lot of difference to the braking performance but it was really the look I was after

It's a combination of 145, sud and 33 parts plus a small amount of fabrication and machining.

Parts required are:

145 or 33 P4 calipers, mounting frames, back plates, pads
33 P4 hand brake cables
Sud drums machined into hubs
Custom made brackets (8mm steel plate)

I've pretty much replaced everything with new or reconditioned parts including wheel bearings, caliper slides, high tensile bolts. The downside has been the cost ..... £470 !

If you can find good used parts and someone to do the machining and fabrication cheaply then you could probably do it for half that cost.

Still think it has been well worth it and if anyone wants to do likewise I have the drawings for fabricating the brackets

I would be interested to know if there is any saving in reducing unsprung weight. I don't suppose you weighed any of the parts to compare ?

like the idea of machining the drum down to make it into a hub, thats cool :O)

those newer calipers are probably better than the alfetta ones im playing with ....

We went a little Radical (literally) with Hi Spec who make the brakes for Radical Race Cars.

All in all probably cheaper than the £470 you quote but quite a lot of machining which in hindsight could probably have been done a little cheaper.

Mate, I'll need a pair of drilled/grooved discs for my 33's rear brakes.

went with the std set up... no need for anything heavy duty on the rears.

Where did you get the conversion studs for the wheel hub?
It's a much neater design than most I've seen, like the Moroso ones used in the US.

Hi all your efforts look good but hydraulic handbrakes are a lot easier and since a change in MOT regs they are now road legal

Spoke to a friend of mine today who owns a MOT testing station and garage. He says that hydraulic handbrakes may be permitted for road use but the vehicle must also be fitted with a mechanical cable / rod operated non-hydraulic system otherwise it will fail the MOT test under the current legislation.

since the introduction of electic hand brakes on calipers there doesn't need to be any cables or mechanic conections on handbrakes still a grey area but they would not be able to fail hydraulic hand brakes !!

From the MOT manual:-

Hydraulic parking brakes as a sole means of operation are not acceptable on vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1968. However, they may be used to assist the application or release of a mechanical brake.

So a hydraulic handbrake should be a fail on a Sud.

Now I'm getting somewhere. Finally got the rear axle and suspension installed and even got to trial fit the wheels

Suspension has been rebushed with Powerflex. Wheels are 16" lightweight with Yokohamas.

Still miles away from completion but it's a bit of a moral booster to get an idea of what it'll look like when it's finished.

Thanks Roger. Wasn't sure when I first bought the wheels whether the black spokes would look ok and was even considering repainting them in silver but now I've had a chance to try one on the car I think that they suit it perfectly

This Sprint will probably be the last ground-up restoration that I'm likely to do having already done more than a dozen over the last 25 years so I want to make a job of it and keep a hold of this one. Getting too old for rolling around the garage floor every evening trying to put these basket cases back together

Future projects will be limited to the"Wheeler Dealer" type of stuff that doesn't need taken completely to bits to start gain.

Just been speaking to a mot tester who has just come back from a refresher coarse they have been told not to check any operation of the handbrake only that the leaver is secure and check it works on the rolling road so he could not see how he would be able to fail hydraulic handbrakes . Sorry to keep jumping on this thread but it would be nice for everyone to know if they could have hydraulic handbrakes
