nuts are 13mm on mine. Not sure about the thread size. Does the chassis still have the integrated square bolt thingys (can't remember their name). I lost 2 of them so use regular bolt and nut.

p.s How's the cylinder head work going after the leak?

hey brit thank you
yeh i thought they were 13mm bolts and ys my chasis does have those weird square nuts but im not a fan of them

the head leak has not been touched iv had the 33 sitting in my garage for a month now without starting it as i cant anyways because my timing belts are out so when the mechanic poured a bit of fuel down the webbers i turned the ignition and it felt like it wanted to start but backfired so he recons the belts are a bit out of timing so its not burning the fuel and and wont let it start and my fuel pump is clogged

so my next thing to do is buy a fuel pump

i got quoted by 2 mechanics here in aus to get my car started and going and to fix the leaky head

one mechanic quoted me $150 an hour and another mechanic said around $1000

so yeah things are tight at the moment with my month old baby so im starting to sell mag wheels and gearboxes to collect that thousand i need haha

1000 Aus dollars!!!! Crazy.
Do it yourself and save 800 dollars. It's not difficult.
200 dollars for gaskets and a torque wrench dude!

DIY - teach yourself and save a packet.

Congrats on your baby. Mine just had his 2nd year birthday.

Spend your cash now before they get older !

Mine's done almost 2000 kms after the head changes and all smooth (just need a new fuel pump which is in the post right now).

yep, 13mm spanner size.

metric nuts/bolts. M8 to be precise.

all stuff on alfas are metric sizes...

the square nut, just chop then off and use a nut & bolt if they're past it and you can't get a tap in there to clean the threads

except the damn vacuum take off on the dellorto carbs, even though these are not built by alfa they are Italian so strange.

Took me ages to find an imperial spanner to fit that brass port.

Also I find some imperial sockets fit better on some bolts, especially on the piston rod end bolts. 1/2 inch fits snugger than the 13mm socket for these important bolts.

yes, but that's talking about bolt/nut head size not thread size/pitch.
you can get an M8 threaded nut with a variety of head (Spanner/socket) sizes
a lot of ford stuff use M8 thread with a 10mm head size, been doing some today like that. stupid really as the head size doesn't help when the threads get stuck

the difference in how good a socket fits is more down to wear on the nut. a 1/2" socket is about 12.6mm so fits better than a 13mm socket when there is some wear to contend with.

i wish i had the brains to do it myself .....
i have done timing belts on holden astras/opelz iv done belts on little ford mondeos but 2 belts on an engine is too hard ....
i done my belts on the 33 thats why it wont start haha i better leave it to a profesional wouldnt want to destroy the heads ..

i also have my fuel system set up stupidly from previous owner because the car used to be fuel injected he done the conversion to carbs but he left the electronic fuel pump which then goes into the original fuel pump which on my car has shat itself which then carries into the little fuel filter then into the carby so it has been bypassed so i have to sort that out

You're not using the same electric fuel pump from the injection model for the carbs are you??

The carbs require no more than 4 psi. Injection models have a much higher pressure and if you use that on carbs it will force open the float needles and totally flood the carbs to death.

but 2 belts on an engine is too hard ..
Really this is the simplest timing to do. Believe me and others here. It's a piece of cake, as long as you line up the marks (BTDC on flywheel) and the marks on the 2 pulleys you can't go wrong.
It's a 5 minute job.

The needle valves will stick open and flood if a high pressure pump designed for fuel injectors is used. Fact.
Do you have a pressure regulator you're not aware of? Check you the pump. What model is it?

What has been bypassed?
