Look what I bought today (part 4)

A long time coming but most know it's already started, but here it is, officaially launched....

PART 4

Spent a nice day out with Shrewi today fetching what was supposed to be a pretty good, tidy & strong Sud shell but we've all been there and seen the mess that is waiting to be unearthed but.............

it does look pretty good

The idea of the build has been bounded about for a while but for those who don't know it will be very simple.

A Sud built mainly for track day use which may be made road legal.
It WILL be a 1.7 16V engined car, donor car already sorted
Stripped out, light-weight. Roll cage, front race seats with no rears.
Custom facia/dials most likely with Bike style instrumentation panel.
Suspension as yet undecided between coilovers or Koni's & Class F type springs.
Outboard front brakes which will be some type of 4 pot caliper, rear handbrake on 33 back axle.
Perspex windows etc.....

Aiming for around 900kgs or less and around 150 to 160 bhp with a few subtle tweaks. More if I come across a cheaper way of getting more go!

Few pics as we collected the car.

Big thankyou to Shrew for taking the day to collect it with his Van and Richard for the loan of the trailer.

Pics are pretty self explanatory, check out the condition of the inner rear wheel arches, amazing The underside looks pretty good, even has all 4 jacking points! At the moment I'm very encouraged by the lack of welding evidently needed but until all the underseal is scrapped and prodded at I won't know for sure but already it's way better than my old red one was at this stage.

The only real rust I've found so far is the wing mounting rail area but I have new panels for that

Check out the rear arches which appear to be original!!! If they've been done then they have been done very well

Shrewi couldn't resist getting a couple of goodies while there for his 155 too

And the new arrival under the frame cover that has been empty for a short while

Looking forward to getting stuck in now

Hey Kev, looks really good mate, rear arches, rear susp. mounts, sills, screen surround all look good, as we know there's bound to be some areas that need work but looks like a great starting point

Cars,Vans,Bikes, derrrr!

This will be a GREAT project guys, i can vouch for everything kev has wrote so far, and it is a remarkable shell to start from, so unless the underseal is hiding horrors, which i doubt, this really is better than Tutankamuns Cod Piece as far as rare treasure finds go i reckon.

Rodger, a huge gold medal should swing from your avatar, hero IMO, and Dave was certainly on form today too, top chap, can't say how well this forum network has worked today.

In fact, I've had a mint time all this week, surrounded by my own and other Alfa's, and dealt with people who are equally keen to see these cars survive by any means neccessary, top drawer stuff indeed.

and don't worry Rodger, Dave was supremely tight lipped about your plans, you tease, he wouldn't let anything slip whatsoever, so still very much a mushroom...

kept in the dark and fed sh..... oooh i can't write that even past the watershed eh!

Lets get the show rolling then Kev, anywhere i can help, just holla...

cheers, all the best guys

Here we go

Kev, its actually a very decent shell you got there !

Nice part about building a track car, is that you can chop off most of the rust instead of welding new pieces and say its for lightening purposes

You havent mentioned what colour you will be going on this one !

Yellow ???

btw.... where on earth are Eddie and Andrew ? Havent seen them around for quite some time !

colour is very much open to debate chris, not decided that one yet.

won't be restricted to period colours either, really would like something a bit different

but "normal" colours, not pearl or anything. needs to be easily resprayable when i prang it

Go for "Martini " look , white with red and blue stripes. I see form the pics that the handmade bay was used again for the new sud. Thats a good reason to justify your purchace to wife

159ti, 33. RIP Sud,75,146

Glad to see part 4 is up and running Kev.

When I went to Malta a few years ago there was a yellow Sud competing and it looked fantastic. Always promised myself that my next rallycar would be yellow. It was a proper yellow though, a bit like that on a Cinquecento abarth not one of these wishy washy ones like on some vauxhalls?.

If you get stuck for seats I have got to replace mine at the start of next year. I am sure we could sort out a deal if they were of any interest.

All the best for the new build.

rsfruitbat

PS What gearbox you gonna put in this one?

Are you sure this one is the right project Kev? Theres hardly any rust at all on it

Joking aside, all the best with this project mate. The Sud should be a little belter when its finished. We're all looking forward to seeing it progress

have thought about a nice bright yellow ade, like the cinquecento as you say.

may well be interested in your seats if nothing turns up before then

going to be running with the 33 engine & 'box for now, should be ok. if it turns out to be overgeared then i will have another think about a 1.2 'box

not that much rust at all yet mark bound to find some when i get the underseal off but it is far better now than my old red one was at the start

Track Sud

Your wishlist looks like a good plan Kev. and you'll end up with a car a bit like mine.
I'm picking up a 16v (on carbs and megajolt) this weekend to slot into it.
Whilst working on the front I will make some reinforcements to the shell as per Peter D's white 'sud as seen on Tim's Alfa Page.
Also fitting 4 pot wilwoods and slightly larger dia discs.
I have two speeds, slow and slower so I'm betting you'll be finished before me.
Cheers
Adam

sounds like we are on similar paths adam

that your black sud?

thinking about doing the same with my headlights (not that i have any at the moment ) just using the outer one with a dip & main bulb and the inner one as air intakes. depends really if i go carbs or injection.....

will have a look on tims page for that white sud, keen to do some reinforments to mine too. quizzed bryan the other week on just that thing while looking at his 33 racer

Track Sud

Kev,
Yep sud that I bought in 2002.
It's an ex. AROC racer and sprint car with a 1.7 8v in it, class F springs, Konis etc that I have re-road registered.
It was featured in CCC in 1993 converted car of the year (didn't win but build by former owner was commended in the article).
These are the pics I have had from Peter Dyrelund that show the strenghtening work carried out.

Blimey, are we talking colour already? Ha Ha!

On the subject Kev, i'm seriously considering painting my 33 myself, so will gradually look into improving the temperature and equipment in the workshop, and looking at buying a decent gun too.

if you decide to go the same way, although we're an hour apart, i would love to help where possible, and extend the use of the workshop too once it does get to the colour stuff, just in case your neighbourly car hord runs out of space eh!

all the best
