Sprint Restoration and Modifications

Hi all,

this is my first post to alfaowners. I am the proud owner of a 1985 Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce.

I bought the car 9 years ago, silver colour, 1.5 engine , not very rusted but not very round wheels
I made the first restoration 8 years ago, painted the car dark violet colour, and put a 1.7 8v engine in it , which later on I supercharged with a Mercedes AMG kompressor

I drove the car until last year, and then I decided to do a thorrow restoration and some changes I wanted , as the body started to show some tin worm due to the lack of waxoyl and a not very good peparation of the first paint job.

I sold the supercharger to Chris - Supercharged16v, and I bought a 16v engine to replace the 8v I had until now.
Other changes I started working on, are power steering, air condition, wider rear arches, ... and whatever else I think about on the way

I already stripped the engine bay, filled out some rust holes and fitted the ps rack of the 16v 33 in place. I also started fitting the a/c heater box and fans.

I will post pictures as the project goes on.

Here are some pictures of how the car is right now :

Cool, keep up the good work.

But for goodness sake make sure that thing is secure on those blocks! Speaking from experience (and very lucky to be here to speak at all!) you really don't want that it falling on you!!!

this looks a nice interesting project

a bit of rust to be found but that's the norm isn't it

why the change form a supercharger to a 16V although i do like the idea of a high revving unit myself

adding the power steering is a good idea, and air conditioning i guess is a useful addition for you over there

looking forward to following your progress as it is along the lines of one of my many ideas

Hi Kevjtd..I used to drive the car with the supercharger for more than 3 years, but i have to say that i was realy lucky because this modification is not legall in Cyprus. And beleave me, the sprint was too agressive and too wild.I will post some pictures with the AMG Kompressor installed. Any way my latest mod wasnt really the supercharger.. Last year i did a custom Turbo installation but unfortunately i was forced to remove everything from the engine because as i mentioned earlier, illegal cars cant get an M.O.T. certificate.. so..stay tuned and you ll see a lot of pictures.

now i know that for the good things in life (your weather) there has to be a trade off but are they really that restrictive on cars thats just crazy

although with the stories we here from chris about cars being crushed due to wrong paperwork i'm surprised there isn't civil unrest wouldn't do my blood pressure any good all those interfering do gooders

at least you got 3 years out of the car but chris, are you going to fit that compressor to your car...........

will the 16v route be ok then? doesn't that constitute a "different/non standard" engine

still like the plans though, and looking forward to a big update after wednesday

God put me on this Earth to finish a certain number of projects. Right now I'm so far behind I will never die!

Kev, the kompressor WILL go on my Sprint I dont really care about our stupid goverment's laws. I am a REBEL !!!
In any case my Sprint wont be used in the streets ... that often... , so an MOT and road tax is not essential !

Some pictures from the work we did on Tasos's Sprint this week

As you can see, these are the problematic areas that needed to be worked on before any changes apply to the car.

one side of the pillar already repaired New fresh metal shaped and welded in place , along with anti rust and protective chemicals

Further more, new pieces fabricated and welded in the engine bay , to host a bigger servo unit and a/c unit.

Also powersteering mounts have been made, and the powersteering rack fitted for testing.

Interior completely stripped as well, all sound proof material removed , as well as the soundproof that was glued on the floor pannels to reveal any rust. Fortunately non was found there

Finally, some more work was done but I dont have the pictures for it.
Engine bay paint was completely striped to bare metal and treated with rust protection solutions as well.

Long time this thread has been " inactive " but I believe that it was worth it

Big surprise coming up regarding Tasos's Sprint !

He is now making brakets and modifications in order to host the 16v engine with gearbox in the MIDDLE of the car

The car will be a 16v , mid engined , Rear wheel drive Sprint, with power steering and air conditioning

Pictures will follow as Tasos has made this decision only two days ago and he is working on the car as we speak

Some more progress today.

Tasos did all the turnings of the metal on the new - rear engine bay.

The engine is now under the rear of the car in order to make measurements and fabricate the brakets for the engine at the rear

Its remarkable to note that the front width of the engine bay, has the exact same width of the rear chasis clearance of the car

Its also remarkable that the engine with box on goes in the exact position where the rear wheel arches allign to the drive shafts on the gearbox , allowing just enough space in front to change the belts and all, and at the rear to make the gear change mech

.... I'm actually surprised why they didnt make the Sprint mid engined to begin with
