Re: lights
I was going to say, surely the easiest option would be to fit a set of 5.75" headlights with replacable bulbs rather than trying to graft in BMW 3-series units which have a projector beam in the centre of the dip lamp which makes the assembly rather long. The advantage of an aftermarket 5.75" lens/reflector assembly is that you can try Xenon bulbs (the "30% brighter" variety, not to be confused with HID) for a few extra quid (two H1 Xenons cost me £15 at Halfords), or, if you feel that non-corroded reflectors and high-efficiency Halogens are still not enough, you can fit an H1-pattern HID bulb (High Intensity Discharge - effectively an arc-lamp) and the "ballast" (a high-voltage power supply) for the ultimate.
As Greek says, HID units only draw about 35W from your lighting circuit, which does reduce the drain on the electrical system. What they do do is put a significant drain on your wallet, with even the cheapest HID solutions around £200.
You can get E-approved Cibie headlamp conversions from Demon Tweeks in both dip and main beam options, with or without an integral sidelight, and with either a flat or convex lens. Most 5.75" and 7" round headlamps are manufactured to a standard specification (I've successfully interchanged US headlights for EU ones in this size), and even if minor modification is required to the Alfa backplate, the plastic trims will be able to cover it.
Pity the guys with non-Ti cars with rectangular lights (and 40/45 tungsten bulbs...)
Hope you find something suitable Pat!
