just bought alfasud L 1975

Hi There,

I've just yesterday bought an immaculate alfasud l here in sydney, it has only 75000 genuine kms, no rust at all! Smokes a little especially when hot and after idleing.. hmmm.
Was after any input you guys might have? Are these fairly rare? I've been out of the alfa world for a while, had a sud ti about 12 years ago and am glad to be back in a sud.
Anyway i look forward to your replies, heres a link to pics:

Well done, what a find. I'd guess your valve stem seals have hardened, mine smokes in the same way when hot and idling, heads off and change the stem seals. Series 1 4 door cars are extremely rare in the uk.

Re: just bought alfasud L 1975

That's just lovely, nice find!

Alfasud L is the 'Lusso' with stainless trim around the tail and the sills, over riders, rev counter and the grey plastic trim on the dash plus fabric trim iirc. The Alfasud N was the boggo basic version and the 5M was the L with the 5 speed gearbox. I don't think there are any Alfasud L's left in the UK now. They were quite rare new and by the time I started with an Alfa dealer in 1984 they had almost all gone anyway.

I remember that colour too. Aged 16 I was looking for a first car and discovered a 1975 Alfasud N in that very colour around the back of the Alfa dealer that gave me a job a year later. I couldn't get insured...........

You'll find doing the stem seals a really nice job. The heads are so easy to remove (drop the exhaust and fift the inlet manifold) and a 1975 car may not even have the cam belt covers although I'm sure it will have. Strip the heads, lap in the valves, new seals and it'll be perfect. Set the tappets with the heads on the bench and be sure to get the cam timing right!

Re: just bought alfasud L 1975

Congrats on a really impressive find. Alfasuds no longer exist in this part of the world (Dublin, Ireland.) They have all turned to dust a long time ago, eaten by our ****y weather. Was a real pleasure to see one again, took me back 25 years and several stone ago.. my first car, my first love... a 1981 1.5ti, even the memory still brings a smile. thanks for shareing it and best of luck.

completely strip the interior out, carpets/seats/door trim/sill trim/rear side panels etc and use approx 2 gallons of wayoyl you can get inside the sills and rear wheel arches that way the waxoyl will bleed through to the jacking points also underneath scrape away any loose old underseal and re-apply new sealant, preferably with an air fed gun check the areas under the front wings and near the door pillar. if in doubt use loads of waxoyl
a very messy job but so well worth it
