perm4 gearbox rebuild

anyone know who could do this, my original box used to crunch in second and sometimes would even jam as one of the lobes on the rod was warn, who could replace this for me, i got another box for £50 off my old tutor from college but the T0$$4 gave me a duff box and its very crunchy.

Re: perm4 gearbox rebuild

Past experience indicated that the only reasonable cost effective way of overhauling transmissions with minimum cost, was to acquire a number of scrapped units, then strip, inspect, then cannibalise, assuming the required components were not shot.

Regular practice on the old Rootes transverse axles we did, but when I had the layshaft needle rollers collapse on a 3.3 GM box, the breaker was the cheapest way forward, as new components were prohibitively expensive. In your case though, maybe a few relatively simple bits may sort it. Good Luck.:

Re: perm4 gearbox rebuild

I bought a 2.0 box from a crashed 156 with 80k on the clock for 350 euro (200 ukp) it turned out to be a good one, but you are never sure.. check the dif for play and shift it a good number of times when it is still not connected to the engine.

Re: perm4 gearbox rebuild

cheers for the replies, are the inards of the 33 fwd box the same as the 4wd box as i cd swap parts about then. And if i had rolled the car backwards and forwards on the ramp with the propshaft disconnected from the rear diff this cd give the box the crunch?

Re: perm4 gearbox rebuild

as far as i know the parts you require ie selector rod etc are the same in 2wd and p4 boxes. at least for the 16v versions not sure if 8v uses same or not but most likely the same...
its not hard to swap those bits just watch out for the pins and the little ball bearings (iirc)
as i wrote somewhere else if you got a good box you can simply remove the back plate and swap it for the P4`s electro magnetic section and it all works fine

good luck mate
