Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

Use selinia oil as recommended by AR. Its good stuff, works better than castrol or duckhams stuff. If you can't get it try using valvoline from euro car parts.

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

Hi again,

I'm having difficulty finding an oil filter - called alfa stratstone in horsforth to find out it isn't alfa stratstone anymore but just a fiat dealer.

Called the parts department who said they couldn't order alfa bits in...and the nearest alfa dealer is in knaresborough.

Is there a fiat oil filter that will fit my 33??

I could pick it up from Horsforth this weekend if so.

Also is it nessessary to replace the sump plug?

Many Thanks!

Matt

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

Matt the filter off the fiat cinq is the same as far as i know. When you get it, just make sure that that the filter has a little valve in it. You'll be able to see it when you look into the filter. I picked up a cooper filter, off the shelf of my local motor factors that fits the bill perfectly. no need to go through the dealers etc as they are usually a waste of space where older cars are concerned. Ill try and track down the number of my filter when i get home if you need it.

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

No problem.

tbh i think your best bet is to drop in to your local motor factor and tell them straight up what its for and that it has to have the non return valve in it. They should be able to sort you out.

If you can see the bottom of the filter canister when you look into it, its the wrong one

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

Great - I've found 2 oil filters for the cinq - 899cc and 1108cc...which one did you use?

Thanks

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

matt, if you have a parts supplier/motor factors near you called Partco/Unipart then ask for oil filter part number GFE422 made by Unipart, it's what I have used and DOES have the all important non-return valve inside. this anywhere near you?
http://www.thelocalweb.net/index/CAC/tlw_145067.htm
if not then as fluffyduff says, any decent motor factors will supply one for you should look like this inside

hope that helps

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

Matt,

Your other option may be Alfashop in Norwich. I've not used them for a while but they were always good in the past and I'll be trying them first when I do the service on my new Sud.

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

Thanks for the suggestions, have now sorted it finally!

Called Unipart with the part number Kev supplied and they have reserved the oil filter plus 5L of their own oil which they found specifically from my registration.

Picking it up Sat - thanks for all your help in finding me an oil filter!!

Quite looking forward to doing the service

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

Just a quicky..... don't need to replace the copper sump washer , a quick fix to re-using your old one is to heat it up over a gas cooker until it glows cherry red and hey presto a nice new soft sump washer.

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

Well did my service yesterday, took quite a while because had to buy a drain plug socket then came back and realised it was too small for my socket wrench! So had to buy a new one of those too..

Bought a new battery too - starts with one turn of the key, don't have to pump the accelerator 20 times now

Sounds really smooth now, all prepared for France on Friday - thanks for all your help with this!

Have one more query but I'll post a picture of it tonight.

Matt

Re: Servicing an old Alfa ?

always helps matt to have a basic understanding of your own car, don't need to be an experienced mechanic or anything but if the unfortunate does happen and you break down then you are more likely to spot a problem if you have a good idea of what it should be like
well worth spending an hour or two familiarizing yourself with where things fasten, where all the fuses are, where all the pipes go etc, etc, that way things that are wrong will seem more easy to spot for you
also worth taking a few basic spares with you, fan belt, bulbs, fuses, insulation tape etc plus a few basic tools
we once superglued the top corner of my mates escort radiator back on whilst following the rac rally a few years back. he had hit a goat down a back road near to his home and by the time he met up with us he had water pouring out. we glued it back together and carried on for another 3 days around wales doing around 700 miles without much problem mind you my mate did have the police banging on his door when he did get home for not reporting running over the goat managed to get it sorted though as he told the farmer (who owned the stray goat) that if he was to be procecuted for not reporting the accident then he would sue the farmer for not restraining his goat , turned out ok in the end
