Re: What was I thinking?

Dont think of it as rotten think of it as an opportunity .
Ugly ducklings can turn into beautiful swans .
A bit of plastic surgery to keep the years at bay .

Jeez it sounds like you have a lot of work to do. Good luck

Re: What was I thinking?

Well I worked on it until 11.00 last night and to be honest it is not as bad as I originally thought, there is quite a bit of rust in the top part of the body but when I got it up in the air on one of our ramps, I was expecting a horror story but nothing, there is little or no rust at all underneath.

Engine stated and ran but not nicely, main problem was that the clutch peddle was sized sold, after a bit of looking worked out it was the slave cylinder, striped out top of the engine, air filter, distributor etc, everything was sized sold. I eventually got the slave cylinder out, to my surprise it is exactly the same as the one found on the V6 gearbox so I had one on the shelf.

Put it all back together with a load of WD40 and some grease, it is now up and running. I took it for a test drive (on trade plates), the only problem found on the test drive was a sized brake calliper.

The car drives well all things considered and is showing 67k miles which I believe is correct.

Made me feel like a student again, mucking about with old cars, now I must get on with some work.

Re: What was I thinking?

Great news that it isnt as bad as first thought .
You mentioning WD40 and brakes brought back some bad memories for me . When I was building the rallycar for first time I put WD 40 in all the cylinders / calipers to stop them corroding whilst I was doing other parts / bits .DISASTER .
I didnt know that it reacts with the rubbers and makes them swell . That was another job on the list when I discovered that they all needed overhaul and rubbers replacing. It was only later that I found out the only thing you should use is brake fluid or that red grease.

Best of luck.

Hi Ned
I've not yet had the chance to get over and see your car - what else have you been doing to it recently?

Re: What was I thinking?

Ah yes, the sweet thrill of the new project, holding your breath as the ever sweet boxer starts again after years of inactivity.......had the same fun as you, just last Easter; got it started and drove it home! Once the crap gets blown out of the engine, these babies just want more and more! Enjoy!

Re: What was I thinking?

As I said, what was I thinking?

I have done some work on it but frankly I have no time to spend on it.

It has to go.

It runs and drives and really isn’t that bad.

Re: What was I thinking?

Its a shame it has to go Ned - but I hope you get a good price and that the buyer will use the AO to let us know how he/she gets on.
best wishes

Re: What was I thinking?

Most of them came with green carpets - looked quite good with a neutral colour like white and matched the Green Cloverleaf exterior detailing nicely. The seats used to be black! They've just faded in the sun.

Saw this on e-bay the first time around - looks a bit too far gone to me. Unless yer name's Kev
