Fuel starvation??

My sons 1.5ti has developed strange problem.
Runs fine initially then after a while feels like it
is running out of fuel and ultimately wont accelerate.

Leave it to cool down then its fine again.

Any suggestions it has new plugs leads distrib cab & rotor

Re: Fuel starvation??

Next time when this happens just open the hood and check the fuel filter. If it is empty then it is something wrong with the tank . If it is ok the it must be a problem with the pump .

Re: Fuel starvation??

Check pump really is pumping. If it is the mechanical type there is push-rod that is operated by a cam on the distributor/oil-pump shaft. Sometimes the part of the pump that is pushed by the push rod wears away.

Re: Fuel starvation??

Sounds similar to a problem I had.

It turned out to be the brass gauze filter, on the fuel pick up pipe, on the sender unit in the petrol tank - being clogged.

This was discovered AFTER replacing leads, plugs, coil electrics, distributor arm (after stripping the distributor), fuel pump, fuel filter, stripping, cleaning and rebuilding the carbs with all new seals and gaskets (twice!!), checking ALL the fuel lines, getting the car rolling road tuned - and losing most of my hair in the process!!!

Taking the tank off is not difficult - but can be messy if there's alot of fuel left in it.

Hope this helps - good luck

cheers

Re: Fuel starvation??

Yep it happened to me with an old Hillman Avenger - pick up pipe in the fuel tank got sludged up - took a long time to find you could possibly try blowing down the fuel line into the tank with a low pressure airline - with the fuel cap open....

Re: Fuel starvation??

.....or you can replace temporalily the fuel tank by connecting a bottle of gas with a hose directly to the filter and place it high so that gravity makes all the work. Just remember to make a hole on the top of bottle so that air replace fuel or it will not work. Let it work a little and see if you have the same results...

Re: Fuel starvation??

Problem Fixed was the Damn tank suction filter
fixed by blowing compressed air back down line.
