Sprint 6C build up

I've just read from page 1 - 10 and have enjoyed every post... what a cracking project sixnut.

I wish i had half the talent of some of you folks taking on these mammoth projects.

Oh well i'm still in the throws of building my garage, these threads just make me grin at what I may be tinkering with once i have a roof over my head

Keep up the good work, I'm hooked on seeing the finished 6c

My progress has slowed a bit recently as work is getting in the way! I have a window of opportunity next weekend though, so I'm tidying up in the garage to make the most of it.

Sixnut, I think you might be getting a cult following ... I too was pointed in the direction of this thread by Pud237 when I suggested the idea of taking a GTV and putting the engine in the back ... which looking at what you've been up to actually looks feasible (on the assumption that I have the time/money to do it of course!!!), I would love to make mine 4 wheel drive, but I think that adds a whole new level of complexity (unless has been suggested I leave the engine in the front and just add another one to the back and link the ECU's together somehow) ...

... I have one question for you though, from what I can tell you've taken the whole sub-frame, engine, gearbox, transmission etc from the front rotated it round 180deg and put it in the back ... so how have you managed to get around the fact that reverse will now be forward and you'll now have 5 reverse gears???

engine /gearbox still facing the same way
he had to manufacture (very ingeniously ) the gear linkage to come forward , what would have been out the front of the radiater on the 164

And to answer another part of 156Chris's post (And his 156 picture) I did hear of a newly designed tractor that ended up with 5 reverse gears and one forward because the Diff design was for clockwise rotation and the gearbox design outputted Anticlockwise
Another, hinted at, aspect of the build is that cost has been a major factor. It is, very much, being built on a miniscule budget (those of a nervous disposition read no further......about £750 so far.......)

Grrrrr - a window of opportunity! but today was one of those frustrating days when Everything messes up. Simple ten minute "drill out two pop rivets and replace aluminium bracket" ends up taking an hour and a half!!!
My idea about brake calipers and hand brakes from the rear of the 164 onto the (Ex) front hubs is not straightforward so needs rethinking......
But I did get more welding done around the back and am slowly getting a part of an inner wheel arch installed. Will post some pics tomorrow

the way i see it there are only so many jobs to do, and even allowing for the 'fix 2 jobs find one more' syndrome then jobs are still getting ticked off the list
keep at it, one day we will have a 'mad restoration' get together day

Handbrake calipers are always a bit of a nightmare - but seeing as legislation has relaxed a bit over the use of hydraulic parking brakes (I think the authorities had to give way because Citroen were using them), have you considered using a handbrake with a hydraulic cylinder and locking one circuit?

In spite of it being a messed up day, you've still made plenty of progress!

Yes I will be considering a hydraulic option - I used to use a "Line - lock" when I was drag racing and I think there was a hydraulic hand brake on the "Rally Design" website that Alfa 302 linked to earlier on this thread. Hopefully a better "tinkering" day tomorrow!

Another mixed day but I've welded the front reinforcements to link the inner wings to the door pillars. But I've also had a closer look at my 164 rear calipers and I think that I will be able to use them with a fairly straight forward adapter plate - so I've run the cables and sorted where the hand brake fits!

good progress made today seem to be sorting the major problems out, the race is on

Hydraulic handbrakes.
A friend of mine has had one on his Minari (Alfasud based) for about 5 years without any MoT problems. I think he used the Rally Design parts. Apart from removing the need for cables etc, the hydraulic set-up is a much more effective handbrake than the standard Alfasud calipers.

I have looked at the Rally Design parts and they will be my "Fall back" position - I will adapt the 164 parts and see how they perform - certainly the 164 handbrake worked well and in the much lighter 6C should prove better than the original sud/sprint system??
