mine failed its last mot with a broken front spring, rusted clean through, i replaced both and had a look at the non broken one, not long for this world either, so my advice is replace both and save yourself the hassle of having to get both done at different times.
pomeo does your 'if it aint broke dont fix it' mantra aply to the cam belt as well?
the only reason for not doing both springs is being a tight b'stard, yes you can probably get away with it but considering the state my 'good' spring was in when i replaced it im glad i did. the difference to the ride was staggering.
Was trying to ascertain where you draw the line on an issue like this.If you do not stop somewhere you end up building a complkete car.
Yeh the springs are rusty BUT they dont rust trhough...they fracture...Metal fatigue?...fault in the manufacturing process?
I recall a section of old mondeo spring was found lying on the drive. No rust Clean cut right thro.
Anyway ,being a tight B ,dont tell jabber that i got a new front spring.
(Fastfrank to note Do you think that they will notice the red brera listing to starboard.
Gulp choke choke...this humble pie stuff is heavy going eat eat.
Well Ah was wrang
Auld Scots for "I was wrong"..Translation for international observers.....Well I was part wright
The mondeos springs did fracture clean cuts in multi places.
The Alfa's the Alfa's......they just rust rotten in the same place.
It must have been fine for the MOT in Jnanuary as it passed and no advisories.IIRC will need to search and check...But on checking i took the following pics as I am waiting on good weather to do the rear springs n shocks and camber as Lacey eats rear tyres and Pomeo doesn't and on looking Pomeos wheels seem "bandier".
(In next post)
Well Laceys rears are rusty Pomeos look as if they have been replaced at some point.I think But the broken spring is not recent imho ...Is it just the plastic cover has now gone and the break is obvious.
As Jabber says do both
even if paying someone or doing it yourself...Being a cheapskate on some occasions just doesnt pay off.....Well with the interest I saved in the bank it may make the repair slightly cheaper...Niall have you still got your lowering springs....Don't know whether to use mine as still shiney red in the boot and try aligning camber on lacey when done ..If the guys on the other camber thread get it sorted....or buy new Alfa springs with the correct war paint
Are they the same springs just with different paint?
Oh no if the springs come from Italy ..the land of the rising Euro, then they will be dearer than they were if I had done it when the other snapped...
That's life....So my apologies Jabber....You were right now need the spring AND GOOD WEATHER.
