Help scary orange light

hi, i am a bit new to these forums but here goes. I have a 2001 "twinnie" recently purchased after years of bangers which have never caused any concern, but tonight on starting it sounded like a
massey ferguson tractor for a couple of seconds then the" engine control system failure" light appeared.Could they be linked or am i just that lucky?
Have been for a drive and it runs ok but orange light still on

Any ideas?

Re: scary orange light

Your profile says you have a 164, but if it's 2001 it'll be a 166. If it is a 164, it's unlikely to be the variator. I'd say get it on an examiner and see what it throws up.

Re: scary orange light

tractor sounds will be the variator....if it goes away quickly then just live with it until you're next cam belt change (every 36k).

The orange light is the engine diagnostics light and if you get a code scanner (try a GS200 from ebay) it will tell you whats wrong and let you reset it....i'd put a wee bet on the MAF though

Re: scary orange light

Thanks for your replies
Typical Alfa, this morning no tractor or orange light and all is well ,but as I park on a slope could the variator noise be oil related as I parked it "nose down" on my drive?
Hey,what the hell ,lets wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Re: scary orange light

Welcome Andrew Stevens from......Steven Andrews

PS: My scary orange light has been on for a month now. Local independent read it as "unknown fault". He put it out, but it came on again after a few days. Probably the MAF, but I have more pressing issues.
