From an earlier post I have today taken my 166 2.5 24v to a local exhaust centre to have work done. I thought that the CAT needed to be replaced but it turned out that just the centre section
There had been a terrible noise coming from what I thought was the exhaust system like a bag of spanners rolling around inside the system or a very loud metal "rattle" almost like a "Jingle Bells" sound, very embarrassing.
Anyway, the exhaust was done and young Joe took it for a quick test drive. I could staightaway hear the same loud rattle sound as he drove away " OH DEAR "
The lad returned and said that he thought the sound was coming from the front wheels. Very kindly took both front wheels off and he soon found the problem!
Behind each front brake disc he found a small shield shaped thin metal items (3 x 3.25inches) with 2 holes for bolts at the top and 1 hole at the bottom. One of them had 1 and the other had 2 bolts missing and they had been flapping against the brake discs, metal against metal making one hell of a noise. Remember this was an exhaust centre, but he removed them for me, took the car for another drive and no more noise.
I handed him £15 for a drink, we were both happy!
My question is, what were these items and do I need to have them replaced???? In fairness the lad did say that I should find out but he thought that it was 50/50 whether they should be replaced or not.
I'VE GO A NICE QUIET ALFA ROMEO NOW!!!!!!!!!
