I have never owned an Alfa before but have always lusted after a 166 and remember the first one I saw on the opposite carrigeway of the M1 years ago. What was that stunning looking car with the small headlights were my first thoughts?
Now time has moved on and after starting a small business for the first time in over twenty years of company cars it was 166 time.
Eventually I tracked one down, probably paid too much and bit the bullet.
Had a bad day at work today, cold miserable and fed up.
Climbed into the 166 momo seats, switched on heated seat.
Clicked auto into D and pulled away. Observed the swoopy dashboard, smelled the leather, turned on the fab sound system.
Temperature now almost at 90 and just at the bottom of M1 slipway. Click across into sport and prod pedal half way. What a wonderful noise, kind of a cross between a growl and a howl. To be honest the first time I have fully appreciated it.
In years of driving 30k + company cars (last a 530 BMW) this is the first time ever the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.
Cruising steadily at eighty and notice an unfamiliar Alfa shape in rear view mirror. Gets closer and can see its the later 166, only seen one once before.
Driver pulls alongside glances across and nods, I do the same.
In the twenty five minutes it takes to get home my day has been trans formed.
If this is Alfa ownership I am hooked.
Oh and by the way won my bet at work, no breakdowns. YET....
