Re: Buying an Alfa 166 2,4 JTD automatic
Hi guys! Back from Stockholm with my new car after a loooong trip to pick her up. 500 km to get to the dealer, another 500 km back home in the 166, all in the same day. And she´s fu**ing fantastic! What an awesome car! Howard, it´s the original 5 speed automatic with Sporttronic sequential option. It changes gear very smoothly, both in fully auto and seq. I found it adapts quite fast to an aggressive style of driving, then it takes a few moments before settling down to lower revs again. If this is annoying, simply choose sequential instead.
The other thing that immedately struck me was the efficiency of the aircon, it was quite warm in Stockhom with about 27C, but within 2 mins it was freezing cold inside the car. Way better than the 156 system. The only thing I miss on the car really is built in satnav, and AQS which I found superb on the 156. It closes the recirculation flap whenever the pollution level is too high, like when you´re behind an old Ford or something smokey.
Further, the car is equipped with a Webasto heating system, aftermarket, which can be phoned and programmed to heat coolant and passenger compartment! Very useful here in Sweden.....my 156 took ages to reach operating temp in the winter, sometimes 20-25 mins.
Handling was super! Really comfy, yet distinctive as should be. Noise level is also improved compared to the 156, but in fact the engine sounds a bit louder when stationary even though it´s the same lump. The sound of this 5 cyl engine reaching top revs before the gearbox changes is amazing! Who thought a diesel could be this sporty? Torque is slightly reduced compared to the manual version, but I don´t see it as a drawback, on the other hand since top power is the same, 175 bhp´s, there is more of a "peek" with this engine. It feels more like a petrol than before. Watching the needle pass 4600 rpms and still putting out serious power is fantastic!
In total, I´m completely in love.......Have to take her out for a spin now!
