Changing the Steering Rack?

The steering rack on my 2.0 TS is leaking badly so I'm after some advice on how to change it. I've had a look under the car and it sits on top of a cross member. If the steering column is disconnected from the splined shaft that goes through the bulkhead then is it possible to slide the rack horizontally (towards engine) in order to get the shaft out through the bulkhead, or do you need to drop the cross member down in order to achieve this?

Most of the bolts look reasonably accessable so the job looks possible, however, any advice would be much appreciated.

Does anyone have a spare rack that is not leaking?
