Re: Am I mad ???
My introduction to Alfa Romeo was a 12v 164 QV in black with black leather, and was a real fun car to drive for the year i had it. However, a head gasket problem, and my wife's constant desire to have a "newer" car forced me to part exchange it for a......don't laugh...... Citroen Xantia (I said don't laugh!).
But, i was now bitten by the Alfa bug, and after what seemed an eternity driving in a mundane vehicle (one year) i finally found my perfect car after a 6 month "search" - a 1994 164QV in red with the beige hide interior. After a test drive i just knew i had to buy it, wether the wife approved or not. It was to be mine!
Now, after 8 years of fantastic driving, i have decided to never sell the car. My youngest daughter (11) is also Alfa mad, and has already asked for it in my will! So i know it will go to a good home should something horrible happen anytime soon.....lol.
I must have spent an average of £1000 per annum on the car, good years being as low as £2-300, bad years as high as around £1500. She is also becoming a bit tatty looking thesedays, as the paint is fading, the wheels look a bit of a mess, and the interior could do with a spruce. I reckon a good £3000 is needed to bring her back to top condition. And here's my thinking....what car, apart from a 166 could i buy for £3000, that has 5 seats (comfortable), 4 doors, a massive boot, fantastic handling, great suspension, pulls like a train, and sounds as glorious? Exactly, and as i prefer the 164 look over the 166 i might as well keep her. No other car has ever made me smile like my 164, and it's that "smile factor" that is immeasurable, and something non-alfisti do not understand.
So, in summary, good for you in spending the money keeping her going. Long may she live with you. Enjoy!
