Re: 164 fuel consumption, really that bad??
I had booked a family Easter trip to Ireland via Pembroke/Rosslare, and 2 days before the journey my radiator decided to pack up and die. The thought of having to hire a car such as a Vectra or Mondeo made me inconsolable - until my mechanic sourced and fitted a new one in for me just 3 hours before my journey! I do not care about the consumption, if it had cost me an extra tank or 2 in the QV over a Mondeo, etc, then it was well worth it.
Ownership of a 164 doesn't come cheap, but like most things, if your prepared to look after it, it will look after you. I spend approximately £1000 per year on my car trying to maintain it, and reckon i need to spend another £3000ish if i want to get it into the sort of condition that will do the car justice. And i fully intend to do it, as the reward to me is prolongong the life of my favourite car which i have absolutely no intention of ever selling - i find it that pleasing to drive!
