Well Dougie, I too hope it doesn't happen to you and your car. but you have heard of three now, and I do assure you I have not dreamt this fault up. On various forums I know of about ten that have done without even digging.
Redalf..there seems to be no obvious cause and you may be being unfair to previous owner. Mine broke at low speed when my wife was exiting a car park in Cambridge. Its a clean break and suggests three possible causes.
1)component is not up to torque demands of the V6 (it is hardly known on cars with 2 litre engines and same box)
2)Improper nitriding(hardening) of the component making it too brittle
3) Imperfection in the metal itself.
It is significant that the part number is different for 3.2 engined cars, but on the AROC forum there have been a couple of instances from 147GTA owners, so the problem persists.
Happily not every car suffers this, but it is a recognised failure I'm afraid, and my Alfa Specialist was aware of it.
