Hmmm 164 intermitent knocking from f n/s

Im back in the uk for a while and have decided to put the alfa back on the road (after 10 months on drive)- Mot'd last week not too many probs, just returned from a week away (done approx 1000 miles) with 10 miles from home got a mechanical knocking and some inbalance from nearside front - this only happens in a straight line and when engine under load - checked all bushes, wheel nuts etc, there does not seem to be a lot of play in cv joint. Just taken car for 10 mile round trip from cold and it hasnt done it - seems to be a 'when hot thing'.

Anybody any ideas?

2l twinspark 164,powerflow induction kit,new shockers, spax sports spring, superflex bushes - now with bashed in front wing, bumper, inner arch liner ouch!

Don't know how the TS differes in this respect but it's not uncommon in the V6s and can be the bushes in the top engine steady bar (the "dog bone"). Also could be one of the lower engine mounts allowing the engin to tap against the subframe.

Hi Gamphy,

Although not related to temperature, perhaps the lower hub ball
joint(s) are on the way out? It is easy to pass an MOT like this. Most of the time the weight is pressing the ball joint into it's socket, going over bumps lifts them out of their sockets (slightly) and cause knocking.
Also if your are giving it some power, this will raise the front end, resulting in the same.

The only way to really find out is to separate the joint from the hub and check for play by hand.
Got my new ones from the local motor factors for £26.48 a pair. A common part with Saab apparently. Make : Firstline P/N FIRFBJ5212 (PartsDirect)
